French Street Artist Unveils Massive Immigration Inspired Mural

The artist memorializes photos of Ellis Island immigrants in a grand fashion.

TRIBECA, NY — French street artist JR has finished a large reproduction of a century-old photograph of a group of recent immigrants on the side of a Franklin Street building.

The photograph of the children, which was taken in 1908, is a part of a running series of art pieces entitled "Unframed Ellis Island" in which the artist traveled to abandoned parts of the once famous immigration port and superimposed images of the travelers on its now derelict walls.

This isn't JR's first artistic outing in Tribeca. He took a shot from one of his short films and created last year's dizzying ballerina mural, which led to the owners of 100 Franklin Street asking him back to create another striking visual addition to the neighborhood.
