Governors Island May Get Climate Research Center: Report
The city wants to develop a massive climate adaptation research center on Governors Island, according to a report.

GOVERNORS ISLAND, NY — Governors Island could get a massive center to study climate change adaptation, according to a report.
New York City has solicited proposals for a "major center for climate adaptation research, commercialization, conversation and policymaking," to build on the southern half of the island, the New York Times reported.
The plan is in its early stages, and the Times reports that outside consultants have been asked to create a specific plan to show foundations or universities. Calls for developer proposals would begin by the end of next year, according to the newspaper.

The island would become "a living laboratory in how you deal with these issues in an urban context," Alicia Glen, former deputy mayor and now on the board of the Trust for Governors Island, told the Times.
The climate center would also be a revenue-generator for the leafy, 172-acre island, which was once a military base that re-opened to the public in 2003. Last month, the island was named one of America's greatest places.
