Holland Tunnel Sticks With New Holiday Decor After Outcry

TRIBECA, NY — A holiday controversy sparked by seasonal decor at the Holland Tunnel is being avoided this year after 21,000 commuters fumed about a badly-placed Christmas tree and wreath.

A poll commissioned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey last year resulted in demands that the decorations hung over the tunnel's name were moved. For decades a tree had been hung over the "N" in "Holland" and a wreath covered the "U."

A huge majority of voters complained that the off positioning was distracting and that the Christmas tree should cover the "A," with the wreath placed over the "O."

This year, a menorah will also stand next to the toll plaza on the New Jersey side of the tunnel.

The decorations go up Monday, the Associated Press reported.
