Mark Cohen, BCG Securities, Make an Impression While Networking

Mark Cohen, BCG Securities, gives advice on making an impression while networking.

No matter what your profession is, you’ll be able to find many benefits from attending networking events, especially with people in your industry. However, enjoying network events is not natural for everyone and many people do not know what to do or how to make new connections at these events. In order to make the most of networking events, it’s important to learn how to make an impression and hit it off with the other people there. Here are some tips for getting to know people at networking events and actually benefit from attending them.

Be friendly & genuine

One of the best ways to stand out at a networking event is to simply be friendly and genuine. Many people do not know how to approach others and come off as standoffish or start too strong and try to sell someone on their business. You’re ultimately trying to make business connections, but genuine networking comes from first building the foundation of a sincere relationship.

Make real connections

Instead of simply looking for as many people as possible to give your business card to, take the time to make real connections. Learn about the people you’re talking to and what they do. Why are they at the networking event? What are they looking for? You could find a great business contact or simply make a new friend.

Listen instead of talk

You’ll find it much harder to make an impression at networking events if all you do is talk about yourself. Have an actual conversation with the person and actively listen to what they’re saying instead of looking for an opportunity to interject. Many people do not know how to listen and the person you’re speaking with will appreciate your ability to actually hear what they’re saying and ask relevant questions.

Create your story

Going into the networking event, you need to have an idea of what your story is. While you need to be genuine and not put on a fake persona, having a set idea of how you’ll introduce yourself and what you do is helpful when talking to various new people in a short span of time.

Go with others

Attending networking events with others is helpful, as long as you avoid staying together in a group and not speaking with anyone else. Go with a small group so you can work in conversation together, but make it a point to include others in these conversations.

Be helpful

As you’re talking and listening to people, learn what you can offer them that would be helpful. Maybe you have some advice for an issue they’re struggling with, like finding new marketing techniques for their business. Maybe you have another contact that could help them with something. Learn how you can help other people and you’ll see it helps you as well.
