Millennials Are Taking Over The Financial District: Study

Move over, Williamsburg, these Lower Manhattan ZIP codes are some of hottest destinations for millennials in the U.S.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — Move over, Williamsburg, the Financial District is New York City's hippest haven.

Millennials have flocked to the Financial District at the third highest rate in the U.S. with an influx of 2,300 youngsters from 2011 to 2016, according to a new RentCafe report.

The real estate website reviewed U.S. Census data to isolate which ZIP codes in the 30 largest cities across the U.S. have seen the biggest uptick of millennials, which the report defines as those born between 1977 and 1996.

Battery Park City's 10282 ZIP code saw a 54.5 percent spike of millennials over the five year period, which is also the most expensive spot for renters in the U.S. The nearby Lincoln Square code of 10069 also saw a whopping 47.7 percent increase, according to RentCafe's analysis.

Only Lower Manhattan's West Coast rival had it beat for the title of hottest millennial destination with a boom of 8,000 in two Downtown Los Angeles ZIP codes — representing a stunning 91.4 percent jump for one neighborhood with 3,300 newcomers and a 60 percent boost of 4,700 for the adjacent nabe.

The Financial District may be a burgeoning hotspot for young people, but it has yet to surpass Williamsburg for its population of millennials. The Brooklyn neighborhood boasted 43,700 in 2016 — the largest cluster in the country.
