Preet Bharara To Speak At New York Law School Graduation

The former U.S. attorney and the filmmaker behind 'Making a Murder' will both give keynote addresses at the ceremony.

TRIBECA, NY — Former U.S. attorney Preet Bharara will give a keynote address at the graduation ceremony for New York Law School, the school announced. (For more news from Tribeca and New York City, subscribe to Patch news alerts here.)

The school announced on Friday that Bharara and Laura Ricciardi, one of the filmmakers behind the acclaimed Netflix series "Making a Murderer," would both give keynote addresses at the school's commencement ceremony on May 25.

Bharara was abruptly fired from his position as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, which includes Manhattan, in March. The former federal prosecutor, currently a scholar in residence at NYU's law school, was given the pink slip after he refused to quit along with the dozens of Obama-appointed prosecutors who were asked to resign by Trump's justice department. It is not uncommon for presidents to ask prosecutors appointed by their predecessors to resign, although Trump had reportedly asked Bharara to stay in his post after his election.

Ricciardi, a 1996 graduate of New York Law School, filmed and produced the wildly-popular Netflix series "Making a Murderer" over the course of ten years with her partner Moira Demos. The 10-part series investigated the case of Steven Avery, who was wrongfully imprisoned for sexually assaulting a woman and exonerated after 18 years before he was thrown in prison a second time, this time after being convicted of killing a different woman. The 10-part series examined questions about Avery's second conviction. Netflix is expected to release a sequel sometime this year.

Both will receive honorary degrees from the school at the ceremony.
