TRIBECA, NY — The Tribeca Film Festival kicked off Wednesday with more than 100 films included on the line-up for the festival, which runs through May 5.

For its 18th annual festival, the Tribeca Film Festival has touted its diversity among filmmakers. Some 40 percent of the feature films have one or more women directors and 29 percent are directed by people of color.

"Our goal each year is to strike a balance between discovering new talent and showcasing new projects by notable filmmakers and storytellers," the executive vice president of Tribeca Enterprises Paula Weinstein said in a statement last month. "At Tribeca, we believe in amplifying fresh voices as well as celebrating the continued success of artists in the industry."

Originally founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2011 after the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Tribeca festival has evolved alongside the growth and revitalization of Lower Manhattan.

"The festival's become part of the fabric of the city, a tradition — hopefully a tradition that will last forever," Robert De Niro said on the Today show Wednesday morning.

The festival features films, panel discussions, documentaries and more.

Screenings and events take place at a half a dozen different venues in the Village and Tribeca.
