Two Stuyvesant Students Awarded Prestigious Milken Scholarship

Two Stuyvesant High School students were named Milken Scholars.

BATTERY PARK CITY, NY — Two Stuyvesant High School students were among six New Yorkers awarded the Milken Scholarship — a prestigious $10,000 college scholarship that includes lifelong mentorship and career-related counseling.

Incoming Yale University freshman Hanah Jun and incoming Rice University freshman Summer Shabana were named Milken Scholars this month.

Jun, a Stuy senior, is a volleyball player at the high school, where she served as co-captain of the team and led the team to win the New York City PSAL championship for the first time in the school's history. She has a long list of academic accomplishments, including the QuestBridge National College Match Finalist and College Prep Scholar, National Merit Scholarship Finalist and AP Scholar.

Jun has served as the class president twice and launched a program to connect Stuy students with alumni.

She is also a flautist. Currently, she is working with a counterterrorism specialist the United Nations studying the relationship between environmental policy and political turmoil.

This fall, she plans to study environmental studies and economics at Yale.

Shabana, a Stuy senior heading to Rice University in Houston, Texas this fall, founded a program called "StuyPrep" to help bring together students and alumni with middle-schoolers from under-represented neighborhoods to help them navigate the exam — known as the specialized high school admissions test — for getting into the city's specialized schools. The program creates lessons and practice tests while addressing Stuyvesant High School's lack of diversity.

She's earned various academic achievements, including the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Scholar, AP Scholar, QuestBridge National College Match Recipient, Jack Kent Cooke College Scholar, among others.

She is also a violist for the Opportunity Music Project Honors Orchestra and the American Youth Orchestra.

This fall, she plans to study bioengineering and neuroscience at Rice University.

Summer Shabana, a Stuyvesant senior will attend Rice University.


The Milken Institute awarded six New York City students in its 2019 program for the scholarship, which is open to New York City, Los Angeles County and Washington D.C. college-bound high school seniors.

The institute announced the six Milken Scholars May 16.
