Daniel Craig And David Oyelowo Star In Othello At New York Theatre Workshop Through Jan. 18

The show is sold out, but there are still a few ways to catch the "thrilling" and "terrifying" production.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — Two British film stars — David Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King Jr. in "Selma," and Daniel Craig, who plays James Bond — take to the theater in director Sam Gold's production of "Othello," playing at New York Theatre Workshop in the East Village through Jan. 18.

Oyelowo plays the titular tragic hero and Craig the duplicitous Iago in this production set in modern-day military barracks.

The performance has gotten rave reviews. Ben Brantley for the New York Times calls it "thrilling" and "terrifying" and says he's "never seen an 'Othello' as convincingly inexorable as this one."

But unfortunately, tickets are extremely hard to come by — in fact, the show is sold out. There's still hope though. Here are a few ways (some pricier than others) that you can snag a seat:

  • Attend a fundraiser on Thursday, Jan. 12 to benefit New York Theatre Workshop's education and engagement programming. Tickets don't come cheap though; $1,500 will get you one ticket to the benefit performance of "Othello" plus an invitation to the theater's upcoming production of "The Object Lesson."
  • Pay $5,000 to join the theater's patron program, which includes tickets to four productions of "Othello" plus a host of other benefits.
  • Enter the $25 CheapTix lottery through the TodayTix app. The entry period begins each performance day at 12:01 a.m. and continues until winners are notified via push notification three to four hours before the selected performance begins. Winners are offered the opportunity to purchase one or two $25 tickets and can pick up their tickets at the NYTW box office beginning one hour prior to curtain.
  • If you're in the neighborhood, you can join the cancellation line outside the theater at 79 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and Bowery, beginning two hours prior to curtain. Cancellation tickets are full price ($125), subject to availability and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. But be warned: "The cancellation line is outside the theatre, so please dress accordingly."
