East Village Parents Oppose Plan To Lower Fences At Playground
East Village parents debated on Monday the future of the fences around the playground near Tompkins Square.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — East Village parents are asking the city not to lower the fence that borders the children’s playground at Tompkins Square Park. For more news from the East Village, sign up for Patch news alerts here.
Dozens of community members showed up to a Monday meeting to debate the future of the fence, DNA Info reported. The city’s parks department is considering lowering the height of the fence from 7 feet to 4 feet, a seemingly small change that has generated substantial opposition from some local parents.
Council member Rosie Mendez helped to organize the meeting on Monday so locals could discuss whether to lower the fence. The simple question generated passionate response from parents, many of whom worried about the fence’s impact on the safety of the playground.

The department will reportedly make a final decision on whether to change the fence height in the spring.
