Fire In East Village Restaurant Fills Neighborhood With Smoke
The fire was reported at The Smith on Third Avenue Monday.

EAST VILLAGE, NY – A fire in an East Village restaurant sent thick smoke for several blocks through the neighborhood Monday evening, FDNY officials and witness said.
The fire was in the duct work of a restaurants at 55 Third Ave, between 10th and 11th streets, the FDNY said. That address is listed at The Smith restaurant. The fire was reported about 8:30 p.m.

Witnesses reported smoke stretching through the East Village and into Gramercy and Union Square. It was also reported to be in the Union Square subway station.

NYU issued as alert to residents of nearby university accommodation to avoid the area and keep their windows closed.
