EAST VILLAGE, NY — The Lower Eastside Girls Club is raising money to send a group of girls to Puerto Rico to learn about sustainable farming in the springtime.

The organization will be selling homemade jars of sofrito, coquito and cookies for $35 at a fundraiser this weekend.

The cash from the fundraiser — Coquito for Puerto Rico — will help send a group of Girls Club members to two women-run non-profits in Puerto Rico: El Departamento de La Comida and Proyecto Matria's Casa Solidaria.

The Girls Club group will learn about farming, the work that goes into growing food, how it connects cultures, sustainable farming, and the relationship between Puerto Rico and the States. The girls will return and present what they've learned in films, zines, drawings, and more through Girls Club programming, according to the non-profit.

At the fundraiser, Pepe Flores, a longtime Loisaida neighbor ad musician, will perform live music. The event will also have salsa dancing, a raffle, and more.
