'Gelato Sushi' Shop Opens In The East Village
Gelarto is a gelato shop where your frozen treats come intricately crafted in the shape of sushi.
EAST VILLAGE, NY — A new kind of ice cream shop has opened in the East Village, where your dessert won't come in a cone, but rather in the shape of sushi.
Gelarto opened last week in the East Village, and the unusual confectionary serves gelato shaped like sushi, among other inventive creations. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

The ice cream stop is located at 145 Avenue A, the former home of Cafe Pick Me Up. The longtime East Village coffee shop closed in 2015 after 20 years in business in the neighborhood. DNAinfo reported at the time that the cafe's landlord was preparing to hike up the rent, a common refrain that has pushed numerous independent businesses out of the East Village.
