EAST VILLAGE, NY — Want to weigh in on the East River Park resiliency project? Have a specific question?

Various meetings and hearings are scheduled in the coming weeks as the project, called the East Side Coastal Resiliency project, goes through the public review process called the uniform land use review procedure.

The de Blasio administration has been planning a project for years to protect the Lower East Side through Stuyvesant Town from storm surge and sea level rise, as well as damage from storms like Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

A previous plan to implement berms and walls along the FDR Drive was largely scrapped last fall. In its place, the city has proposed a plan to bury East River Park with eight feet of soil and rebuild a new park on top.

The project would require closing East River Park for 3.5 years of construction, which has outraged neighbors. The city has announced various parks and playgrounds upgrades should the park close in its entirety under the plan, though many projects were already in the works.
