Lottery Opens For 32 East Village Apartments
Below-market rents in the new 13th Street development start at $674 per month for a studio.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — A lottery for 32 newly-redeveloped apartments offered at below-market-rate rents in th East Village is now accepting applications. The homes are located in the 433 E. 13th St. between Avenue A and First Avenue.
The bulk of the new apartment units are being offered for individuals and families making 60% of the area median income or less, according to the city's housing connect website. Six of the apartments are being offered at 130% of the area median income.
The cheapest units — six studio apartments — rent for $674 per month and are available for people earning an annual salary between $25,063 and $34,160. Renters earning at least $26,846 are also eligible for one-bedroom apartments renting for $724.

Price increase for units in the next band of affordability, where one-bedrooms rent for $1,115 and two-bedrooms rent for $1,348. Tenants must earn at least $40,252 to qualify for the one-bedroom units and at least $48,275 to qualify for the two-bedroom units.
It may be a stretch to describe the apartments offered for tenants earning 130% of the area median as "affordable." Rents range from $2,318 to $2,991 and incomes of at least $79,475 are needed to qualify for studios.

Prospective tenants may apply for the lottery through the city's Housing Connect website. A mail-in application can be requested by sending a self-addressed envelope to: 433 East 13th Street Apartments c/o SHF Affordable Housing Office, 247 West 37th Street, 1903, New York, NY 10018. Applications must be sent or postmarked by Jan. 27, 2020.
