A man followed a woman into her apartment building and covered her mouth to try to get into her apartment, according to the NYPD.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — A man followed a woman into her East Village apartment building and grabbed her from behind to rob her late Friday, the NYPD said.

The man followed the woman, 19, into her building near East Seventh Street and Avenue A about 11 p.m. Friday, police said in a release.

Police said when they were inside an elevator, the man covered her mouth from behind, wrapped an arm around her waist, and told her to open her apartment door.

She yelled out for help, and when a neighbor opened the door, the man ran away, police said.

He's about 6 feet 2 inches tall and 20- to 25-years-old, police said.

Surveillance images released by police show him in a black baseball cap, a white-hooded sweatshirt, black shorts and black sneakers.
