'Mosaic Trail' Dedication Ceremony Pushed Back to Thursday
Jim Power, aka the "Mosaic Man," will have his restored light poles at Astor Place unveiled.
EAST VILLAGE, NY — The homecoming of art to Astor Place continues with a dedication ceremony for Jim Power's "mosaic trail" light poles on Thursday, Dec. 1.
The ceremony was slated for Tuesday, but rain pushed the ceremony to Thursday, Bowery Boogie reported.
Starting in the 1980s, Power collected painted mosaic tiles, fragments of dishes and pottery, tiny mirrors, sculptures, seashells, and coins he found in the neighborhood, and used the pieces to create mosaics on walls and light posts, according to a press release from the Village Alliance, which is a business improvement district.

When construction on the two new pedestrian plazas began in 2014, seven poles were to be permanently removed, but the Village Alliance worked with many to save the art, and ensure they would be returned to the plaza, according to the release.
Earlier this month, the new plazas were unveiled and the sculpture known as the cube, but is titled the Alamo, was also replanted at Astor Place.

Power has restored and redesigned the light poles. The Village Alliance is leading a crowd funding campaign for the final stages of the restoration, and has thus far raised $5,100 of a $20,000 target.
The ceremony will start at 4:30 p.m. at the Alamo Plaza, Astor Place.
