Mount Sinai Staff Apartment Building to be Demolished

The hospital so far hasn't said what will go in place of the apartment building on 13th Street between 1st and 2nd avenues.

Many questions remain about the new Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital's East Village campus, but one thing was made clear this week: the apartment building at 321 E. 13th St. that houses hospital staff is being demolished.

On Monday, the Department of Buildings approved demolition permits for the 14-floor building that's located between First and Second avenues. Many of the tenants in the building are staff members of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, located at 310 E. 14th St, between First and Second avenues.

The hospital has declined to say what will be going in place of the apartment building.

In May, Mount Sinai announced it would be downsizing its campus in the East Village and selling its facilities at First Avenue and 16th Street. It said its new facilities will go on 14th Street and Second Avenue, but it hasn't announced a specific building or address.

Mount Sinai's press office didn't immediately respond to request for comment.

DNAinfo first reported the demolition of the apartment building. The news outlet reported that several of 321 E. 13th St.'s tenants who have lived there for decades were told they had to be out by the end of the month or their rent would be severely spiked.
