Riis Houses Buildings Evacuated After Part Of Crane Falls: FDNY

New York City Housing Authority buildings were evacuated after part of a crane fell at the complex on FDR Drive, the FDNY said.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — A partial crane collapse in the East Village caused two buildings at a nearby public housing complex to be evacuated Tuesday, the FDNY said.

Firefighters rushed to 749 FDR Drive at East Sixth Street about 2:40 p.m after part of the crane snapped at NYCHA's Riis Houses, an FDNY spokesperson said.

Firefighters were checking the stability of the building Tuesday afternoon, the FDNY spokesperson said. Residents at 749 and 765 FDR Drive were evacuated, according to the FDNY.

FDNY officials said the crane's load snapped, colliding with the building at 749 FDR Drive and ripping off some air-conditioners from residents' windows. The building suffered exterior damage, according to the FDNY. Video from the Citizen App showed a crane dangling high above the building.

FDR Drive was shutdown for about an hour in both directions Tuesday afternoon while emergency responders dealt with the crane, an NYPD spokesperson confirmed.

No injuries were reported.

Department of Buildings inspectors were on-site conducting an investigation Tuesday afternoon, a DOB spokesperson said.
