Stuy Town To Install Solar Panels

The housing complex on the East Side of Manhattan will install thousands of solar panels on its roofs.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — The Stuy Town housing complex will install thousands of solar panels on the roofs of its 110 buildings, tripling Manhattan's solar generating capacity, the housing complex said.

The residential buildings of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village will begin getting solar panels this fall. Once complete, the housing center on the East Side of Manhattan will be one of the largest private properties to be supported by solar power. Stuy Town managers say that the thousands of panels will make it the largest privately-owned, multi-family rooftop solar installation in the U.S.

Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village houses 27,000 New Yorkers. Once the massive complex is outfitted with solar panels, Manhattan's current solar generating capacity will triple, according to managers.

The solar panels, 9,671 of which will be installed across Stuy Town, will offset the buildings' energy consumption. Stuy Town estimates that the panels will generate 6 percent of the total energy used by Stuy Town residents and buildings in a given year. That clean energy is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 62,472 tons, or taking 11,972 cars from the road, according to Stuy Town.

The installation is expected to be complete in 2019.
