Swiss Institute To Open East Village Headquarters In June

The art-focused nonprofit will move into its new digs this summer.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — The Swiss Institute is getting closer to opening its new East Village headquarters and has announced a June 21 open date, ArtForum reports.

The nonprofit dedicated to contemporary art is moving its headquarters to 38 St. Marks Place in the East Village. ArtForum reported this week that the institute has raised 70 percent of the money needed to launch the new headquarters, with $3.5 million of the $5 million goal in hand.

"I am immensely grateful for the continuing support we have been receiving as we create the very first longterm home for the Swiss Institute after more than three decades of existence," board chair Maja Hoffmann told ArtForum. "We are opening much more than a building—it is a new public space in the heart of Downtown, for an ever-growing community to enjoy art, always free of charge. We are committed to continuing a legacy of generative experimentation and to fostering an environment in the East Village in which art can thrive, and be open to all."

The nonprofit will move into a new space designed by Selldorf Architects. The building will allow the Swiss Institute to expand its programming with 7,500 square feet of space, and will also a library, bookstore and rooftop garden.

The Swiss Institute says that the new space will allow the nonprofit to provide additional educational opportunities fro families with kids, students and seniors.
