Total Champ Plays XBox on F Train

The setup included an XBox 360 console, monitor, controller and three large bags.

EAST VILLAGE, NEW YORK — Video surfaced last week of a man playing a video game console with accompanying monitor while riding the F train. The total champ took up seating for at least four people while playing XBox 360 with a controller. He set up a monitor on top of the console with power cords seeming to connect to one of two duffel bags at his feet. He also had a sizable backpack with him.

It’s unclear how long the man was using Xbox 360 or what game he was playing. The story was featured on Twitter moments, and video of the scene circulated on YouTube, as well.

Twitter user @MarkTheDream shared the video with the caption “Just a regular day on the E train,” but this seems to be a mistake, as the man appears to be riding the F train. The conductor can be overheard saying, “This is a Brooklyn-bound F local train. The next stop is Delancey Street, Essex Street.”

Other users on Twitter pointed out the discrepancy between the E or F train as the overhead announcement clearly says F train.

There was also some debate as to whether the F train ride was long enough to make such a video game setup worthwhile before the man had to get off the train.

Twitter user @25_male_NYC pointed out that, if nothing else, this was clearly a case of manspreading:

Manspreading is frowned upon by the MTA, but there isn't a specific rule against it in the MTA's official rules of conduct. Manspreading is part of the MTA's Courtesy Counts campaign.

Below is the first list of Courtesy Counts initiatives that the MTA asks riders to observe:

  • Keep Your Stuff To Yourself
  • Step Aside To Let Others Off First
  • Take Your Pack Off Your Back
  • Offer Your Seat To An Elderly, Disabled, Or Pregnant Person
  • Keep The Sound Down
  • Take Your Litter With You
  • Don't Be A Pole Hog
  • Clipping? Primping? [Specifically, this means don’t clip your toenails or brush your hair]
  • Poles Are For Safety, Not Your Latest Routine [A reference to "showtime" dancers]
  • It's A Subway Car, Not A Dining Car [Don’t eat food on the subway]
  • Keep The Doors Clear So Others Can Board
  • Dude…Stop The Spread, Please [AKA reference to manspreading]

The MTA, when reached for comment, sent a link to its rules of conduct. The agency did not specifically comment on the actions of the XBox-playing man.
