Webster Hall Marquee Damaged

The music venue's iconic sign could be seen dipping toward the sidewalk on Sunday.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — The iconic Webster Hall marquee became partially dislodged from its brick wall on Sunday, causing the sign to tilt precipitously forward before it was stabilized.

The classic sign outside the music venue, located at 125 E. 11th St., was reported by passersby at about noon on Sunday after they realized the heavy sign was drooping toward the ground.

Fire department and buildings department officials responded to the scene, briefly closing part of 11th Street while they inspected the damage.

The building's marquee was "partially dislodged from the bricks and was leaning," according to city officials. No part of the marquee collapsed or fell onto the sidewalk. It's unclear what caused the damage to the marquee, but the structure could be seen visibly dipping toward the ground on Sunday before firefighters stabilized it.

The marquee was stabilized and is currently supporting by scaffolding.

The historic music venue, which first opened in 1886, is currently having its insides gutted while it undergoes renovations. The longtime area concert hall is being remade and remodeled under its new owners, who bought the venue in April before announcing plants to change the iconic space.
