You Can Now Live in an East Village Synagogue
Adas Yisroel Anshe Meseritz synagogue is now accepting tenants, if you have a couple million dollars to spend.
EAST VILLAGE, NY — If you want to be really close to your house of God, a synagogue in the East Village is giving you the opportunity — so close, in fact, you won't even have to change out of your slippers.
You can now buy an apartment at Adas Yisroel Anshe Meseritz synagogue at 415 E. Sixth St. after the luxury condos went on sale last week. There will be condos available on the second, third and fourth (top) floors of the synagogue originally inhabited by the congregation in 1910 (but built decades earlier). But the updates, done over the past year, are decidedly modern and it shows in the prices. The two-bedroom, 2 1/2-bath second-floor condo is on the market for $2.95 million. The third-floor condo, also two bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths, will cost you $3.25 million. And the fourth-floor penthouse apartment will be on the market for $4.395 million. The third and fourth floors both have outdoor patio space, but only the third floor includes restored stained glass windows.
The synagogue will continue to operate as a house of worship on the bottom floor.

The future of the building had been up in the air before developer East River Partners came in and remade the top floors of the building as residences. Back in 2008, the synagogue pushed to be designated an historic landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in order to save it from demolition. It subsequently was landmarked, and the congregation came to an agreement with East River Partners to remake the top floors of the building as condos, and renovate the bottom floor and basement for the synagogue.
