SPRINGS, NY — An East Hampton man was arrested after he slammed his vehicle into two Springs businesses, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Kevin J. Buestan, 20, was arrested at 12:05 a.m. Saturday morning on Springs Fireplace Road near School Street. Buestan was driving a gray 2018 Ford when he was involved in the crash; upon investigation he had a "very strong" odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, police said.

Springs Fire Department Chief Darrin Downs said the car crashed into the Montauk Market and Springs Auto Repair. The driver's side door was pinned up against a generator, he said; to extricate and evaluate Buestan, the passenger side of the vehicle needed to be removed, as well as a portion of the rooftop.

During the rescue, there were concerns that the building might collapse, Downs said. Once EMTs evaluated Buestan, he was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, he said.

As of Monday, the auto repair shop remained closed, Downs said. "There was a fairly decent hole in the back," he said, as well as a section of concrete damaged and a portion of the building that collapsed.

The market, he said, was open after the crash, with damage mainly to the shingles in front.

As firefighters worked to rescue Buestan, Downs said there were concerns over the proximity of the generator; in addition, electrical wires were brought down near the market.

Buestan was charged with driving while intoxicated, first offense, a misdemeanor, and released on his own recognizance, police said.
