East Hampton Budget Sails Through

EAST HAMPTON, NY — Residents in the East Hampton Union Free School District voted to approve the district's $70,947,120 proposed budget for the 2019-20 school year on Tuesday, May 21 by a wide margin.

After the votes were tallied, the budget passed 410 to 56.

The proposal calls for a 1.58 percent increase in spending over the current year and the tax levy increase is 1.85 percent, which is within the tax levy cap.

"We are mindful of the priorities our community has established to maintain programs and the appropriate staffing for our students, and we believe it is most important to keep the interests of our taxpayers in the forefront of our thinking. The Board of Education and I believe we can achieve these goals. . .I hope you will join us in continuing to provide a quality education to all East Hampton's children," said Superintendent of Schools Richard J. Burns.

Residents also elected three members to the East Hampton Board of Education. Four candidates vied for three seats, and the winners were incumbent James P. Foster with 303 and incumbent Wendy Geehreng with 318, as well as Sandra Vorphal with 346. Candidate Jeff Erickson garnered 199 votes.
