Jet Set Vet to the Rescue For Pets in the Hamptons

The dog —and cat —days of summer are a whole lot nicer thanks to Dr. Cindy Bressler, veterinarian to the stars, and ordinary folks, too.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — What do you do if your pet gets sick in the middle of the night in the Hamptons? Or if you have a friend with a pet staying with you and the dog or cats needs immediate medical attention?

The answer is simple: Call Dr. Cindy Bressler, an on-call vet available 24/7 during the summer season in the Hamptons, covering Southampton to Montauk.

Day or night, she's around to help. Veterinary house calls are her speciality and many of her New York City clients also reside in the Hamptons. She'll also come into the city if need be — or she'll fly to Aspen or Palm Beach.

Bressler provides house calls not just for emergencies but also for routine procedures and care.

Other services include providing in-home hospitalization for pets whose owners don’t want to leave them in a vet’s office or hospital — to arranging for pet massages and medication deliveries on the beach.

Bressler graduated from veterinary school in Canada and interned at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan.

“Fourteen years ago in the Hamptons I realized that the only 24-hour veterinary service was all the way in Riverhead so I decided to fill a niche,” she said.

What she came up with was exactly what any brilliant doctor to the stars would order: Why not make not only house calls, but hotel calls and jet calls, too?

That’s exactly what she did and now, flying in by helicopter or plane wherever she is needed is a normal occurrence to the vet many A-list stars turn to in New York and in the Hamptons during the summer season.

Bressler also has a partner in Los Angeles; they often treat the same jet-setting pets depending on which coast the pet lands on — and she also travels to wherever the dogs and cats are in need of her care.

Her clients include the furry friends of many celebrities.

“Donna Karan called me at midnight one night and said her house guests had a sick dog. What should she do? I told her I would come right over,” Bressler said.

But a pet doesn't have to have famous owners to become one of Bressler's clients. For the dedicated veterinarian, its all about the animals.

Recently, she had a client whose dog had kidney failure and a vet in Los Angeles advised putting the beloved pooch to sleep, she said.

“I told them the dog was young and I thought with time, it would be okay. We set up care for the dog in a hotel and within three weeks, the dog was fine,” Bressler said.

She added that sadly, such happy outcomes aren't always the case with kidney failure; the age of the pet and the pet’s state of health make a big difference.

Bressler remains accessible to all, and urges potential clients to reach out.

“You need my cell number and my email,” Bressler says. “Because out here, sometimes cell service isn’t good —I tell everyone to call, text and email if you have an emergency.”
