EAST END, NY — A long-anticipated repavement project for New York State Route 114 is moving forward.

According to New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele, the New York State Department of Transportation has said that the project, which will repave Rt. 114 from Stephen Hands Path to the South Ferry in East Hampton, Sag Harbor and North Haven, has entered the design phase.

A total of $13.1 million has been budgeted for the work; construction is slated to begin during the fall of 2021, Thiele said.

The project involves restoring the pavement's riding surface by removing the existing asphalt overlay, repairing any damage to the underlying base, and resurfacing with new asphalt; sidewalk curb ramps will also be installed and upgraded to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, Thiele said.

Community members were notified about the upcoming project and given the chance to weigh in on design suggestions, which have been sent to the NYSDOT for evaluation, Thiele said. Business and community groups still have the ability to submit suggestions to the state during the pending design phase, he added.

"I have advocated for this project with my fellow elected officials for several years. This resurfacing is long overdue. I am pleased that I was able to secure the needed funding during the 2020 state budget process to proceed. This is also an opportunity to make this route safer for the traveling public, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Hopefully, key safety features can also be included within the budget," Thiele said.
