Long Island Proud: The Majesty of Gardiner’s Bay

It's beauty is on display every night and every day.

It is the gift that is forever giving. With pristine salt water beaches, to the many trophy homes on the bluffs along it shores and to the many boaters who sail it’s waters, Gardiner’s Bay is a paradise playground of water.

The history it has witnessed is the lore of the east end. Captain Kidd docking off Gardiner’s Island and ferrying his treasure ashore to bury and hide from the British! The British Navy parking 100 or more vessels filled with fighting men during the American Revolution along with the sounds of munitions being tested on Fort Tyler during World War II , now the fort of course Is referred to as the ruins!

However how about back in 1640, when folks from Lynn, Massachusetts came sailing into the bay looking for the place to start their new colony settlement. I often wonder why they ended up at Conscience Point over at the mouth of Peconic Bay, sailing through, Gardiner’s Bay past North Sea only to land in that lagoon now called North Sea Harbor?

I have been sailing Gardiner’s Bay for 17 years from May to November. I watch the seals swim, the fish jump, the occasional dolphins show off and yes once a whale off Orient heading towards Greenport. The whale experience was one of disbelief of what I saw until I read about the next day!

Luckily to this day I have not seen the fins of any sharks!

However it is the nighttime sunset that has captured my soul. Every night somehow something magical happens, even when it’s raining, the clouds use that wide open space to show the power and glory of nature . I take many photos but nothing can replace being in the middle of the bay when the sun goes down.
