Douglas Mulaire died peacefully at home in East Hampton, on Wednesday, Sept. 8, of pancreatic cancer. He was an artist and educator with a life-long passion for fishing and gardening.
He was a professor of photography at Fashion Institute of Technology, The International Center of Photography in New York City and lived in Brooklyn. Doug and his wife Susan found a Second home in East Hampton ten years ago, where he was drawn to the light and beauty of the East End.
Doug was born in Stamford, Connecticut on Sept. 28, 1948. He is remembered and appreciated as a thoughtful, kind, and calm friend, teacher and colleague. Also, he was a supportive and giving friend, always making you feel welcome and special. His Brooklyn studio was where he worked exploring and developing his keen interest in the relationships and importance of color in his own painting.
He loved food and nothing brought him more pleasure than cooking for friends, using what he could catch or harvest from the ocean and pick from his garden. From an early age he followed his grandfather around, developing what would become a life-long love of fishing and clamming. Likewise, he loved to share and pass on his many interests including art, music, and simple pleasures such as clamming to his family of friends and family.
Doug had a wonderful sense of humor and delightful story telling ability that will be most fondly remembered.
In addition to his wife Susan Taylor, Doug is survived by his sister Juanita Cullen, and brothers Vic and Larry Mulaire. The family suggests that donations in Doug’s memory be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, N.Y.
The Memorial Celebration for Douglas Mulaire will be held on Saturday Sept. 27th at 2:00pm at The Brooklyn Meeting House, 110 Schermerhorn St.,(at Borem), Brooklyn, NY 11202. There is plenty of parking either on the street or in lots nearby.
