Montauk-What's Next?
Will the new rules, the new laws, the new enforcements of codes work?
So what is next for Montauk? After Supervisor Larry Cantwell and the East Hampton Town Board acted by changing/lowering the available legal Parking near the Surf Lodge, and the Fire Marshall’s new attentiveness to capacity ticketing of the popular venues will the attractiveness of Montauk to the new generation of twenty-something’s grow next season or wane?
Is the binge drinking systematic to this twenty-something age class or just the ones who flock to Montauk is not the question; the question is about safety. The safety for everyone, locals, summer quest, and weekend visitors. Every day new drugs are being invented to be abused. A generation unable to buy homes, cars, or find good paying jobs are finding relief from living in their parents homes by behavior now being exhibited in Montauk on weekends.
Montauk is an on the map “happening place” almost like Haight Asbury was in San Francisco in the 1960’s. Even though the East Hampton Town Police force knows everything about summer season policing they have their hands full with this growing new dynamic that has yet to define itself. Will it go away or grow.

My conclusion is this, I hope the behavior is controlled by proper management, however my fear is in the knowledge that Montauk is unique and has always had a magnetic force to attract the “different” type personalities, and that phenomenon may be growing faster then anyone knows.
