New School Year Kicks Off At Sag Harbor Schools: Photos

Construction projects at the elementary school will be completed soon, with student input garnered for finishing touches.

SAG HARBOR, NY — It was smiles all around as Sag Harbor students in kindergarten through grade 12 were welcomed back warmly on Sept. 5 by teachers, staff and administrators.

“Let me be the first to offer our students and families our warmest welcome to what we will strive to make their best school year ever,” Superintendent Katy Graves said in a note to the community. To prep for that “best ever,” the administration, teachers and mentors participated in professional development this summer geared toward helping them to support the individual successes and accomplishments of every student.

Elementary School Principal Matthew Malone shared the theme for the school year, “Community, By the Sea and Beyond,” and led a round of applause for everyone helping to enhance the school grounds and learning environment.

Substantial construction projects at the elementary school, including a new multipurpose court, new athletic playing field, new plaza, new sidewalks, new fences and a guard rail along Route 114 will be completed soon, Graves said. Students will give input on the finishing touches, such as which games will be painted on the new plaza in front of the school’s entrance.

Student safety, district officials said, is paramount: The staff also spent significant time to remind everyone of related protocols, conducting fire drills, and checking to make sure important technology and tools were in place to monitor specific health concerns.
