...And Now Sutherland Springs

When will we learn?

… and now Sutherland Springs. Latest report: 26 dead; 20 injured. God knows that today’s mass murder isn’t the first of its kind, and sadly, it won’t be the last, unless we as a nation and as a people get our heads out of the sand.

As the friends and families of those gunned down in a small Baptist church in a sleepy town in Texas grieve, so does an entire nation mourn, and so laments the heaven above, and Mother Earth, as well.

In the long, dark days to follow, the loved ones so senselessly gunned down will be laid to rest in peace forevermore, but among the living, the pain and suffering will long endure.

What happened in Newtown, Vegas, Orlando, and San Bernardino, to name just a few of the mass murders in recent years, are tragedies of epic proportions. Once again, we will walk through the bloody alleyways of our hearts and souls, as we watch the endless news stories telling us about those who were slaughtered and of those who managed to survive. We will continually find ourselves asking —why this? Why now? Why does this insanity continue to happen?

There will be more questions than answers.
More tears shed than any of us can bear.

We need more than flags waving at half-staff, and more than just moments of silence: we need action.
The heart-wrenching screams and the actions of a young madman will long echo throughout our churches, and the sight of blood and carnage will haunt us all, for as long as we shall walk this earth.

We are a nation and a world that is failing our children and ultimately all of humankind.
If we continue to blindly defend our right to bear arms, then I hope we are strong enough to bear the burden of that right, and that we find the strength to carry out the dead and dying….

The Thornton Wilder-like town of Sutherland Springs, where everyone knows each other and where most people never even bothered to lock their doors at night, will never be the same. Innocence lost forever.

I pray that we do not lose our faith in God and in the good powers of the universe, for they are so much more powerful than any evil.

Pray for Sutherland Springs. Pray for us all.
