Opinion: Long Island Proud: Preparing for Post-Covid Life

It is time to come out of safe hibernation and get on with living that wonderful Long Island lifestyle.

For most Long Islanders, our lives have been on a pause. Whoever thought the pause would be so long and so grim? However, the time is coming for a reset. What does that mean varies but in some way, somehow, many Long Islanders will have to restart the momentum they had in their lives pre-Covid 19. There are many freedoms I now miss that I took for granted. Such as having casual, summer drinks with friends and strangers alike to celebrate or commiserate at various well-known popular local establishments without wondering if I will get sick or if am I breaking the law.

Somehow, this biological terrorism war on us all by this virus will somehow wind down. It has to because how long can we stop from living, even in the name of safety? I will not aim to blame the numerous leaders who I feel have lied and manipulated this grave situation for their political advantage or their political opponents' disadvantage. Shame on them! Instead, I want to focus on what might come next. As we march to vaccinate l want to discuss what comes after that success.

First, there has to be a euphoric phase of regaining freedoms and a lessening of fear. For me, that will be joys like enjoying lobster rolls all over the East End or dining at my favorite places indoors while it rains or is too cold to be outdoors.

Second, there will be the reintroduction of our smiles, now too often hidden behind protective masks. I still find myself doing my photo smile when my picture is being taken while wearing our protective masks.

Third, there is going to be an intense increase in travel! Traveling to see family, travel for vacations, travel for instant adventure. Who hasn’t missed the freedom to go anywhere at any time on a whim or a need? I sill have not seen my first grandchild who lives in England and will be a year old in early April.

Fourth, I hope we will be seeing the beginning of the end of Zoom meetings. They really do give me a headache after 10 minutes of staring at a device. Imagine going to festivals, plays, movies, art shows, parties, live music whenever you want? Boy, did we take that freedom for granted.

Lastly, actual contact with folks such as hugs, handshakes, greetings and kisses. Love is an important energy in this world and outward affection and real contact is important. I have felt terrible for the unattached single folks unable to pursue coupling up and all the joys that brings.

Long Island is a jewel of a location to live. There are beaches, beautiful roads, wonderful parks, an abundance of wildlife and this island is very outdoor activity friendly. Bikes, surfboards, boats, motorcycles, jet-skis, cross country skiing, golf, tennis, swimming, outdoor yoga, rock climbing, and so many other things like bird watching make us all Long Island proud!
