Opinion: Marigrace Dineen's CD "Great Gun" is Something Special

Out of the blue a CD arrived in my mailbox, I played it...3 times. So here's why.

I have written thousands of articles on many topics mostly in the Hamptons for the last 13 years. I have been slipped perhaps 100 CD's to listen to. This is the first one I have ever taken the time to write about, why? Because it is that good. Marigrace Dineen contacted me via Facebook after seeing an article I wrote about Nancy Atlas and asked if she could send me her CD. About a year later it arrived in my mailbox. I loaded it into my car CD right outside my Post Office in East Hampton and headed west on Route 27.

The first song is a cover of "Something in the Air," first released by Thunderclap Newman in 1969, the year of Woodstock. Ms. Dineen's vocal of this classic song layered my attention instantly. The second song "She" an original of Ms. Dineen is filled with all sorts of symbolism and for me to believe I know what she was thinking would be just guessing, but it had me listening and thinking. The third song, "Sway," another Marigrace Dineen original is my favorite of the songs on this CD. It's a blend of breezy ocean air jazz, with a touch of sunset soul, wrapped around a great vocal in a very tight song. The next song is a cover of Steve Winwood's classic, "Can't Find My Way Home." Besides an amazing vocal the arrangement on this epic tune is brilliant. The intertwining guitars of Bosco Michne, Klyph Black, and Randy Hudson will glide you into a special place.

Then comes, "Montauk Highway," a rocking song about perhaps my favorite road, the one that took me home to my Ditch Plains Montauk home every night for 5 years. By the end of hearing this song but once I was singing the hook, alone in my car. Thank God it was a foggy night with no cars around.

I am writing this review on 9-11-2018. The second to last tune on this CD is titled, "In America," another Marigrace Dineen original that is all about 9-11-2001. I was in downtown Manhattan that day and hearing this song for the first time literally on 9-11-2018 had a power all to itself, however it may be the best 9-11 themed song I have heard. The very last tune on the CD, is a classy cover of Irving Berlin's, "Count Your Blessing," made famous by no other then Bing Crosby. Marigrace Dineen's vocal on this tract shows off her talent, vocal skills, and her ability to connect the dots that makes music art.

Hugh Pool (acoustic guitar), Jack Marshall (guitar), Klyph Black (Bass and guitar), James Benard (Drums),Bosco Michne (guitar) Michael Le Clerc (bass) and Randy Hudson (acoustic guitar) all play amazingly. Also appearing the most recently deceased John Brzoza who added so much soul to the tracts "She" and "Can't Find My Way Home." R.I.P. John Brzoza.
