EAST HAMPTON, NY — Customers of the East Hampton Capital One bank branch may have had the privacy of their personal information inadvertently breached, the bank said Tuesday.

"Recently, some bank documents intended for shredding were accidentally displaced from our shredding vendor's truck as it left the East Hampton branch," a Capital One media representative said, of the bank located on Newtown Lane. "Immediately upon learning of the incident, we worked quickly to recover the documents and began a thorough investigation to identify which of our customers may have been impacted."

Out of an abundance of caution, the representative said the bank notified all of its customers whose information may have been contained in the documents that were being transported by the vendor.

"We have taken steps and added precautions to prevent anything similar from happening in the future," the Capital One representative said.

In addition, the representative reminded that the bank monitors accounts for suspicious or fraudulent activity — and it is now offering two years of credit monitoring service at no cost to customers.

"Capital One customers are protected by our $0 fraud liability policy, which means they are not held responsible for any confirmed fraud on their accounts," the representative said.

The bank did not have a number to share regarding the number of customers who may have been impacted, the rep said.
