EAST HAMPTON, NY — The future is grim for an 18-month old rescue dog who desperately needs surgery.

Diane Smullen of East Hampton created a GoFundMe page, "Surgery for Our Lovable 18-Month Old Bulldog Bo" to try to raise funds.

"Our adorable, affectionate, fun-loving rescue bulldog Bo has injured both his rear knees and needs surgery this week to repair them," Smullen wrote. "Bo is an extremely active young bulldog who we love dearly and has become a loving member of our family."

Bo, she said, tore the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, in his right leg running a few weeks ago and his left knee went next.

"We thought we did the right thing by getting insurance when we first rescued him because we knew that bulldogs tend to have medical issues and we knew we couldn't afford to pay out of pocket for something such as this," she said. "When we called the insurance company with his diagnosis we were told that they will not cover major injuries until we have reached one year of coverage at the end of December."

The need is dire, Smullen said.

"Bo can't wait that long. He cannot walk without assistance. We are asking for your help to pay for his surgeries as we have no other options except the unthinkable option of putting him down. This breaks our hearts. If you can't help, please share Bo's story with anyone you think may be able to."
