7-Year-Old And Hempstead Town Made Her Neighborhood Safer
Isabella Marroquin wrote to the town asking for signs on her block to make it safer for children, and the town delivered in a big way.

UNIONDALE, NY — Over the years, the Town of Hempstead has worked with engineering firms, construction companies and public works organizations to help keep pedestrians and motorists safe along the town's roadways. On Wednesday, the town worked with 7-year-old Isabella Marroquin of Uniondale, who wrote a heartfelt letter to the town requesting a “Children at Play” sign on her home street of Greengrove Avenue to help keep her family, friends and neighbors safe.
Town Supervisor Donald Clavin and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, who represents the area, responded to Isabella's request and unveiled two signs on her street. In addition, they gave Isabella a replica sign that featured the same cartoon cat stickers that were included in her letter to the town.
“Supervisor Clavin and I are proud to join with Isabella Marroquin, an amazing young woman who spearheaded this project to enhance public safety in her community,” Goosby said. “Isabella’s caring spirit is proof that you’re never too young to change the world!”

While spending more time at home during the cornoavirus pandemic, Isabella noticed that cars would often speed down her street. In addition to many houses, Greengrove Avenue is also home to the Maryhaven Center of Hope Recovery House, Saint Martha Roman Catholic Church and Hartnett Funeral Home.
The town installed two Children at Play signs — one on the east side north of Jerusalem Avenue and one on the west side by Hempstead Boulevard.

“Thanks to Isabella, Greengrove Avenue is now a safer place for people who live, work and play in the neighborhood,” said Clavin. “We are confident that Town of Hempstead neighbors will be forever grateful for Isabella’s leadership in helping to keep her community safe.”
