East Meadow Senior Center to Close Wednesday

Dispute over rent forces the shuttering of the building.

After being unable to renegotiate a contract with a landlord, the Town of Hempstead will be closing the East Meadow Senior Center.

The center, located at 1485 Front St., has been open for 20 years. According to Newsday, the town has been using the property rent-free thanks to a 20-year lease agreement it signed with the company that owns the building, Mitchel Field Senior Citizens Redevelopment Co. That agreement expired this summer, and the town and the company couldn't reach new terms.

According to Newsday, the company wanted $9,000 a month for the building, and the town didn't want to pay. Instead, the town will bus residents to the Salisbury Senior Center, which is about three miles away.
