East Meadow's Empress Diner Closes

The diner, which had been a community staple since the 1950s, quietly closed earlier this month.

The Empress Diner, which had been serving East Meadow for more than 60 years, has closed its doors.

The Panagatos family, which owned the diner, made the announcement in a brief post to the restaurant's Facebook page last week.

"The Panagatos family would like to thank all our customers for years of loyal patronage," they wrote. "We have been honored to serve you and your family over the years — watching each new generation come and join our family."

The Empress Diner, located at 2490 Hempstead Turnpike, had been serving the community since 1955. The Panagatos did not give a reason for closing the restaurant, simply saying it was time to move on.

"We wish you health and happiness for all the years to come," they wrote.
