EMFD Asks Residents to Keep Hydrants Clear of Snow

The pending storm has the potential to drop significant amounts of snow, often burying hydrants

A winter storm forecasted this week has the potential to drop significant amounts of snow. Fire hydrants often become buried in heavy snow or due to road-plowing operations. The East Meadow Fire Department’s inability to locate a hydrant at the scene of fire could have disastrous consequences for you, your family, and your neighbors.

The East Meadow Fire Department asks residents to do their part and shovel the snow around fire hydrants near their homes to make sure the hydrants are visible and accessible for firefighters in case of a fire. By keeping hydrants clear of snow, your fire department can do its part to locate and connect to them. It’s important to remember that, in a fire, seconds count and that, by helping us, you’re helping yourself, your family, and your community to stay safe.

  • Remove snow within a 3-foot perimeter of the fire hydrant
  • Shovel a path to the street so that firefighters can access the hydrant
  • Try to remove any ice that may accumulate on the hydrant
