EMFD Volunteers and District Employees Respond to Snowstorm
Volunteers perform standby duty at firehouses; district employees make sure that facilities are clear of snow

East Meadow Fire Department’s volunteers were recently called upon to perform standby duty at their respective firehouses to provide around-the-clock coverage to residents in case of a fire, medical, or other emergencies, such as motor vehicle accidents during the recent snowstorm. While volunteers gave up the comfort of their homes staffing the firehouses throughout the storm in the protection of their community, employees of the East Meadow Fire District also worked long hours to make sure that the district’s firehouses were kept clear of the falling snow.
“Our volunteers are part of a 24-hour public-safety organization that performs vital fire and emergency medical services to residents in East Meadow and parts of Levittown and Westbury. We appreciate the sacrifices they make in protecting the community, especially during the recent snowstorm,” stated Commissioner John J. Priest. “However, the volunteers would not have been able to fulfill their duties without the behind-the-scenes support services provided by our district staff who worked tirelessly to make sure that access to the district’s firehouses and other facilities were kept clear of snow. We thank them for their efforts, too.”
The East Meadow Fire Department is always looking for new members to join their ranks as firefighters or emergency medical personnel; no experience is necessary. The fire department provides the training required. There are numerous benefits associated with volunteering, including tax breaks, college scholarships, annual health checkups, life insurance, and a service award pension program, all at no cost.
