Hempstead Town Waives Late Fees For Water Customers
The Town Board unanimously passed the measure as the coronavirus pandemic creates uncertainty for many town residents.
HEMPSTEAD TOWN, NY — As the coronavirus pandemic continues to upend life in New York and create a lot of uncertainty for many people, the Hempstead Town Board voted to waive all late fees and penalties for customers of the Town of Hempstead Department of Water. The bill was passed unanimously by the board.
The Town of Hempstead’s Department of Water serves 37,000 customers within the Bowling Green, East Meadow, Levittown, Roosevelt Field, Lido-Point Lookout and Uniondale Water Districts.
“People are worried and concerned about COVID-19, and are contending with major life changes, including business and job losses, reduced income and medical concerns,” said Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin. “Our hope is that this bill will help give people one less thing to worry about during this uncertain period.”

Customers are billed quarterly depending on their metered consumption and late payments are subject to penalties and interest. Under the new legislation, all penalties and interest charges for an individual that would normally accrue during the Water Department’s billing period – March 15, 2020 through June 15, 2020 – are waived.
