Long Island Weather: Powerful Nor'easter Looms

A hazardous weather outlook has already been issued for a major coastal storm expected to impact the island later in the week.

March is set to roar in like a lion with a potential nor'easter lashing Long Island later in the week.

The National Weather Service has already issued the following hazardous weather outlook:

There is potential for several tidal cycles of minor to moderate coastal flooding and dune erosion from late Thursday into the upcoming weekend. There is also a low chance for high winds and flash flooding during the Thursday night into Friday night time period.

The first three days of the work week look just splendid for this time of the year. Dry conditions and highs in the 50s are expected through Wednesday.

Things will deteriorate by Thursday afternoon, though, as a storm system approaches the area. Moderate to possibly locally heavy precipitation along with gusty winds are likely Thursday night through Friday, the NWS says.

At the moment, that precipitation is expected to be mainly in the form of rain. There is a chance of some snow mixing with the rain late Friday into Saturday as temperatures dip to near freezing.

The forecast will almost certainly change over the next few days (sign up for Patch news and weather alerts for updates), but for now, we are looking at a 36-hour storm with rain potentially falling from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning. With more than two inches of rain possible, fooding looks to be the main concern at this point.

"There is a very low chance for localized major coastal flooding in the most vulnerable areas," the NWS says.
