UNIONDALE, NY — Two large developers — including the group behind the Islanders new arena in Belmont — are proposing to turn Nassau Coliseum into an exclusive music venue, according to reports.

Newsday reported that the Oak View Group has been joined by New York Arena Partners, which is behind the Belmont project, in its proposition to downsize the Coliseum and turn it into a music venue.

The Coliseum has been shuttered since March, when the coronavirus outbreak forced it to shut down and all of its planned events to be cancelled. Then the property manager Nassau Events Center, a subsidiary of Onexim Sports and Entertainment, announced in June that it was shuttering the Coliseum, citing loses sustained during the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent shutdown. The closure would have led to nearly 1,500 permanent layoffs.

Last month, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced the county reached a deal with Nassau Live Center to take over management of the venue.

There are still plans for the Islanders to play their remaining home games at the Barn until their new Belmont arena is completed, which should be next year. According to Newsday, Nick Mastroianni II, the force behind Nassau Live Center, is holding meetings to figure out what the future of the property is beyond the next NHL season.
