Uniondale N.Y. – The Uniondale Union Free School District has announced that Smith Street Elementary School, recognized as a National School of Character in 2014, has recently become 1 of 27 schools in the nation to become recertified by a team of experts at Character.org. The School of Character designation is given by a team of state evaluators to schools that implement the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education. The school will be honored next month at Character.org's 2019 National Forum in Washington, D.C.

“Our students have intrinsic values which are evident in how they treat each other each day,” said Smith Street Elementary School Principal Dr. Lynnda Nadien. “They show respect, responsibility, and reflect on their actions.”

Character education is instilled by fostering a positive learning environment for students and creating a school culture which promotes increased academic achievement. The Uniondale School District focuses on providing educational, social and volunteer opportunities that empower students to become responsible global citizens by infusing the Character Education Pillars into the school culture and climate.
