Town Of Hempstead Offers Free Weekend Holiday Drive-In Movies

The movies will be shown beginning Friday at Town Park, Point Lookout, and will be available on a first-come-first-served basis.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — As the holiday season approaches, Hempstead Town officials announced Thursday that they will offer free drive-in movies to local residents on weekends beginning on Friday.

The movies, which will be shown at 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays all month, will be shown on an 18' x-28' LED screen at Town Park Point Lookout, 1300 Lido Blvd, The movies will be available on a first-come-first-served basis and to ensure the safety of residents, attendees must remain in their vehicles at all times and must wear a mask if they leave their vehicles to use the restroom.

“The Town of Hempstead was among the first municipalities to put together safe and socially distanced drive-in movies and concerts during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are excited to continue that tradition with our Winter Movie Festival this holiday season,” Town Supervisor Don Clavin said in a news release issued Thursday.

“While many festive events have been scaled back or cancelled across our township in the interest of public safety, these free town movies are a great way to get in the holiday spirit with your family while keeping them safe and healthy.”

  • Friday, December 4th at 5 P.M. – It’s a Wonderful Life
  • Saturday, December 5th at 5 P.M. – Polar Express
  • Sunday, December 6th at 2 P.M. – An American Tail
  • Friday, December 11th at 5 P.M. – Elf
  • Saturday, December 12th at 5 P.M. – The Preacher’s Wife
  • Sunday, December 13th at 2 P.M. – D2: The Mighty Ducks
  • Friday, December 18th at 5 P.M. – Almost Christmas
  • Saturday, December 19th at 5 P.M. – The Grinch
  • Sunday, December 20th at 2 P.M. – Frozen 2

The free movies this month are the latest community activity that Town officials have introduced in a drive-in format. Since the pandemic began, Hempstead has offered town has hosted drive-thru awards ceremonies for veterans, firefighters, boy scouts, graduations and little league games.

“The Town of Hempstead is committed to providing our top-notch programs and services, as well as cultural and awards ceremonies, in a manner that is safe and enjoyable for our residents,” Clavin said. “These are essential pieces of our community’s identity and quality of life, and we will do everything in our power to continue offering them.”
