Author, Activist Bernice Sims Celebrates Black History Month 2/16 at Farmingdale State College

Bernice Sims – long-time civil rights activist and author – will speak about milestones in American black history, the importance of community activism, and her book, Detour Before Midnight at Farmingdale State College Thursday, February 16. The event will be held in Campus Center Ballroom A at 11 a.m. The public is invited.

Born and raised in Mississippi, she became a member of the NAACP as a teenager and was involved in protest marches and voter registration campaigns. Her book chronicles the murder of three young black men in
the Freedom Summer of 1964. The men were on their way to the investigate the burning of a black church; Sims wanted to accompany them but they insisted she stay behind. Detour Before Midnight not only pays tribute to her friends but paints a picture of the survivor’s guilt she suffered with for years.
