Boat Falls Off Trailer And Onto Road In Farmingdale

The 26-foot boat was found laying on its side in the middle of a busy turnpike nearing rush hour. 20 gallons of gasoline were spilled.

FARMINGDALE, NY — A boat fell off its trailer and onto a busy road in Farmingdale on Tuesday afternoon. The 26-foot vessel lay on its side in the middle of Hempstead Turnpike near Merritts Road as Nassau police, Farmingdale Fire Department and South Farmingdale Fire Department units arrived at 3:15 p.m.

The boat spilled 20 gallons of gasoline. Some went into a storm drain, prompting a call to the Nassau County Fire Marshal Hazardous Materials unit.

Hempstead Turnpike was closed in both directions for over an hour as crews worked. Traffic was backed up for over a mile in both directions during the afternoon commute. A heavy duty tow truck was called to up-right the boat. No injuries were reported.
