Man Charged With Manslaughter In Fatal Bethpage Crash

Police say the 30-year-old man was driving drunk when he crossed into oncoming traffic Tuesday morning.

BETHPAGE, NY — A 30-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in a fatal crash in Nassau County Tuesday morning, police said.

John Cappello, 30, of Massapequa, was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Monteiro south on Stewart Avenue near the intersection of Linden Avenue in Bethpage when he crossed over into oncoming traffic and collided with the driver of 2019 Nissan Rogue traveling north at 10:35 a.m.

The driver of the Rogue, a 74-year-old woman, was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

Police said Cappello was drunk at the time of the crash. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree assault and driving while intoxicated.

He was transported to an area hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
